Chhau Mask is a traditional cultural heritage of Purulia in the Indian state of West Bengal. The tradition of making Chhau masks started during the rule of king Madan Mohan Singh Deo of Baghmundi. The Chhau mask is traditionally associated with the age-old dance forms in Purulia.

Brand | Chorida village (Baghmundi Block) of Purulia, West Bengal is internationally famous for making of chhau masks used in chhau dance. More than 200 artisans of this village are involved with this craft. Dharmendra Sutradhar is one of them. Dharmendra Sutradhar, 33, started making masks when he was 10 years old. He inherited the cultural heritage of this craft from his father, late Gopal Chandra Sutradhar. Like many other artisans of this village, Dharmendra has also adopted the style of chhau dance being son of this soil. Masks made by him have been displayed in various national and international arenas with high esteem. His unique style has brought fame for him and given him an identity in this field. Creative Dignity is a movement that has brought together diverse creative producers, practitioners, and professionals to energise the ecosystem that Indian artisans need in this time of COVID-19 and post-COVID-19 impact. The focus is to provide relief, and rejuvenation of the artisans in a bid to ensure their sustained prosperity.
